High-powered extras
the z28 package, which added a minimum of $400 to the price of the basic camaro coupe, included such stylistic delights as a ducktail rear spoiler and racing stripes. Inside the machine were power front disc brakes, heavy-duty suspension, a muncie four-speed manual transmission, holley four-barrel carbs and a 302-cu.-in. V8 engine that chevy rated at 290 hp but that actually neared 400 hp. This powerhouse could reach 132 mph after hitting 60 mph from a standing start in 5.3 seconds.
trans-am terror
in 1967 the z28 did well enough in the trans-am championship series, but in 1968 it was dominant, with driver mark donohue winning 10 of the 13 races. These racing successes are what caused a marked increase in sales of the
z28 to nonprofessional racers, with production soaring from 602 in 1967 to 7,199 in 1968.
