The adventurer series was created by desoto to compete with such other performance cars as the plymouth fury sports coupe and the chrysler 300. The first adventurer, a two-door hardtop coupe that was technically a fireflite subseries, rolled out of the factory in 1956, and within six weeks all 996 units were sold.

Last produced in 1961, desotos are now just a distant memory, but some will remember that in the mid-1950s they sponsored groucho marxs long-running you bet your life television quiz show. Desoto also reaped publicity when a gold-and-white fireflite convertible was the pacesetter for the 1956 indianapolis 500.
