Nailing the competition the nail-head engine named for its small, vertical valves and also called the wildcat 445 for its torque was being used in most full-sized buicks when introduced in mid-1965 as a skylark option. (this gran sport, or gs, should not be mistaken for buick rivieras own option by the same name.) for just an additional $200.53 buyers got not only the bigger, more powerful engine but also the accessories needed to support it a heavier chassis and rear axle, revised springs and shock absorbers and oversized tires. Almost 70,000 skylark gran sport coupes and convertibles were sold in 1965. not so gran sales never approached this total again. Although fast off the mark, this buick gs was not big league in handling, braking or high-speed stability, and the ride was hard. For 1968, it became a separate series with a shorter rear end, a less angular roofline and a spearlike side molding. The ones equipped with a smaller v8 engine during the 1967-69 model years are considered junior rather than true gran sports.
For 1966, the gran sport received a longer body, blackened grille and fender dents. Beneath the hood was the powerful nail-head v8 engine.
