the gto designation (it stands for grand tourismo omologato) fooled no one. The 288 was not cast in the same mold as the immortal 250 gto that dominated sports-car racing in the early sixties, but in the mold of the 308 gtb. Official records reveal that 255 ferrari 288 gtos were built for europe with just 72 reserved for the restof the world. Unlike its predecessor, the 288 enjoyed few racing successes.
smooth as glass
the 288 gto was given little chance to strut its stuff, for group b was annulled in 1986. Like its predecessor, the less highly tuned 308 gtb, the early 288 gto had fiberglass bodywork designed by pininfarina and constructed by scaglietti, who had built bodywork for the old 250 gto by more traditional methods. But the
standards of finish were worthy of the 288 gtos sporting pedigree. While the 288 gto did not have the success of its legendary ancestor, the 250 gto, its handsome lines alone made it a desirable sports car. |
