For 1949, industrialist henry j. Kaiser stole a march on his big three rivals by introducing a four-door hardtop convertible actually a sedan that resembled a convertible. One could argue that it was not a true hardtop either, because it had fixed side-window frames. What the car the virginian had was a light steel top on a convertible body, with black or tan nylon padding on the top to give it a convertible look.

In 1969 a joint venture between the soviet union and the italian automaker fiat began producing a sedan for export called the lada 2101, based on the fiat 124. This model has been updated over the years, most recently as the 2107 in 1983 and the samara in 1986. Volga auto works, or vaz, had plans to introduce the lada 2110 in late 1993.
