Alec issigonis was an engineer with a cosmopolitan background. He was born in smyrna, a predominantly greek town in turkey, and was the son of a bavarian mother and a greek father who had become a naturalized briton. Trained as an engineer in england from the age of 17, issigonis joined morris motors in 1936. In his spare time, he built a monocoque-body 750cc racing car.

A cheap, small model, the 1929-34 morris minor (not to be confused with the post-world war ii car of the same name) was the companys answer to the similar, but more popular, austin seven. The minors original overhead-camshaft engine was derived from the wolseley ten and adopted by the m-type mg midget. All three marques were part of william morriss automotive empire.

Earl muntz was a southern california used-car dealer whose zany tv commercials earned him the nickname madman muntz. But earl muntz had a dream to build his own car. His muntz jet, based on the 1948-49 kurtis sport, is considered by many to be the first high-performance personal luxury car.

The boss 302-cu.-in. V8 engine used to challenge chevy for the 1969 trans-am racing title may have been named for ford ceo bunky knudsen, but the thousands of customers who bought the mustang production version got to throw their weight around, too. Not for long, however: The production boss 302 lasted only two years, and knudsen was bounced in 1971 by the ultimate boss henry ford ii.

Nash Ambassador - 1948
Like the big three automakers, nash continued producing its pre-world war ii cars through 1948 without major change. Sales were strong because of pent-up demand during the war years. Ambassador remained the top nash series, and an ambassador sedan was the official pace car of the 1947 indianapolis 500.
