stock car is a misnomer. The model name and body contour are all a car competing in nascar events has in common with a regular passenger car. Before going into combat a production cars chassis and bodyshell are reinforced and the interior is stripped, leaving only a drivers seat. The window glass is removed, the doors welded shut and a steel roll cage is constructed to protect the driver. Of course, the souped-up engine bears little relation to what the average motorist finds under the hood.
king richard does it again
richard petty is the undisputed king of nascar racing. Shown here fielding the stp red-and-blue colors in a 1974 dodge charger, he captured his
fifth winston cup title that year by winning 10 of the 30 grand national races, including the daytona 500 for an unprecedented fifth time. Petty would go on to win the daytona 500 and grand national championship twice more. No nascar driver has ivon as many titles as richard petty. Driving a dodge charger, he won his fifth title in 1974. |
